On 11 December 2024, Herman Verbist participated as moderator in a webinar on “Expedited International Arbitration : Approaches and Global Perspectives (Part II)” which was organized by the North America Branch of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.

This was the second of a series of two webinars on this topic. The first webinar was organised on 13 November 2024 with Dr. Alan Anderson (PhD, FCIArb, Alan Anderson Law Firm LLC, Minneapolis, MN, USA) as moderator.

The speakers of both webinars were all contributors to the book “Expedited International Arbitration : Policies, Rules and Procedures” of which Dr. Alan Anderson and Dr. Herman Verbist are co-editors and which was published in 2024 by Wolters Kluwer.

Having regard to the United Nations Convention on International Settlement Agreements Resulting from Mediation, which was opened for signature in Singapore on 7 August 2019 (the “Singapore Convention on Mediation”), it was very interesting to attend also the IBA Mediation Committee meeting in Singapore on the topic “Investor state disputes : how arbitration and mediation can intertwine to provide more resonant solutions”.

The book offers an overview of the Belgian sports arbitration case law up until 2018

The book offers an overview of the sports arbitration case law of the Belgian Court of Arbitration for Sport ( Cour Belge d'Arbitrage pour le Sport in French or Belgisch Arbitragehof voor de Sport in Dutch) and of the Court of Arbitration for Sport ( Tribunal Arbitral du Sport in French).

It is the first to contain summaries of published arbitral awards rendered:

(i) in arbitrations before the Belgian Court of Arbitration for Sport between 2012 and 2018; and

(ii) in arbitrations before the Court of Arbitration for Sport between 1992 and 2018 involving Belgian parties.

The book also contains statistics on the BCAS's case law and summary tables of the abovementioned arbitrations. Keywords indexes also make it easier to find decisions rendered in a specific sport or on a specific theme (licence, violence, doping etc.).

In the introduction, the book further explains the definition of a sport pursuant to the ECJ 's case law and other important decisions rendered in the field of sports.

The Convention enters into force on 12 Septembre 2020

On 12 September 2020 the United Nations Convention on International Settlement Agreements Resulting from Mediation entered into force. Opened for signature in Singapore on 7 August 2019, the Singapore Convention on Mediation has meanwhile been signed by 53 countries and ratified by 5 countries. Offering a common legislative standard for the enforcement of international commercial settlement agreements resulting from mediation, it makes mediation as dispute settlement method more efficient in an international context. Herman Verbist published an article on the Convention in 2019 in the periodical b-Arbitra, which is available on Kluwer Arbitration.
